عزت‌نفس، یعنی احساسی که هر فرد نسبت به ارزشمندی، توانمندی و «کافی بودن» خود دارد. بسیاری از مشکلاتی که افراد در بزرگسالی تجربه می‌کنند—از روابط ناسالم گرفته تا ترس از شکست، کمال‌گرایی افراطی یا نیاز دائمی به تأیید دیگران—در واقع ریشه در عزت‌نفس شکل‌گرفته در سال‌های اولیه زندگی دارد.

کودکی دوره‌ای است که در آن، ذهن انسان مانند زمینی حاصل‌خیز، باورهای بنیادی درباره «خود» را دریافت و تثبیت می‌کند. آنچه کودک در این سال‌ها از محیط، والدین و تجربه‌های عاطفی دریافت می‌کند، به تدریج به این باور درونی تبدیل می‌شود:
«من ارزشمند هستم» یا «من کافی نیستم».

عزت‌نفس چگونه در کودکی شکل می‌گیرد؟

یکی از مهم‌ترین عوامل شکل‌دهنده عزت‌نفس، کیفیت رابطه عاطفی کودک با والدین یا مراقبان است.

زمانی که کودک:

  • در زمان ناراحتی آرام می‌شود
  • احساس دیده‌شدن و شنیده‌شدن دارد
  • محبت را به‌طور قابل پیش‌بینی دریافت می‌کند
